Whack fol the diddle-o

"She swore that she'd loved me, and never would she leave me. But devil take the women for you know she tricked me easy." This is a verse from a well beloved song that I will always cherish from my childhood. I always loved the songs my dad sang me while he strummed his classic guitar. Mostly, he chose old-timey songs that dealt with prison, train wrecks and race cars. This song was one of my personal favorites, because my dad would always sing it in his gravely voice and hit the guitar on every "whack-fol." This song is very well crafted and literally puts you in "Cork or Killarney." The protagonist of this Irish song ends up in jail, and what could be more thrilling to a Catholic country kid? After much diligent research to this song I uncovered its true meaning. This song is actually about a highway man's plotted robbery of a military officer who stole his true love. This song has no original date of origin and is very long-lived.  It seems that in every culture "love shall trump all"; as far as song lyrics go.
